ALS : Coal P.O., Pa., to John C. Boyd, Philadelphia, Pa., 1839 Oct 18.

The letter is addressed to Boyd by his mine superintendent, David Nice. It describes preparations for next year's business, the number of miner's houses, and the price of coal at Sunbury. The letter was written to help Boyd raise money in Philadelphia for the organization of the Shamokin Coal Company and therefore exaggerates the capacity of the mines and the market's ability to absorb their product.
